When itinerant lawman Ray Tatum's quick visit to the North Carolina Outer Banks is complicated by a homicide, Ray gets hired to help track down the killer and finds himself locked into a winter at the shore. A string of barrier islands that's two hundred miles from tip to tip, the Outer Banks might be a tourist mecca in the summer, but it's a frigid, wind-ravaged trial more often than not in the off season. Graveyard of the Atlantic indeed. Fortunately for Ray, the seaside desolation suits him right down to the ground. Wry, sour, corrosively funny, Ray Tatum is made for a winter at the beach. Better still, he's a steady, solid cop and a capable addition to a Kill Devil Hills PD in what is surely their worst hour.
Here's the shore like you've never seen it. Let Ray Tatum be your guide.
First In Flight marks Ray Tatum's fifth appearance (also Cry Me A River, Polar, Blue Ridge, & Warwolf).
These novels can and should be read in no particular order.
First In Flight edition by TR Pearson Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks
Ray Tatum, ex-cop, would like to have nothing to do with serial murders, policing, drug dealers, or female military officers who knock on your bedroom door in the middle of the night. Unfortunately, he just is not in control of the situation.T.R.Pearson, national writing treasure and author of classic stories about the American South is obviously enjoying describing Tatum's predicaments.
...."The Sheriff called Cutler ‘buddy’, and Cutler called the Sheriff ‘sport’ because neither one, apparently, could quite remember the other’s name."....
The story starts out strange, the gets strange from there. Off-season beach territory should be quite and calm, without inexplicable murders committed by someone who is not only deranged, but begins to toy with the authorities... Should be.
...."She liked what she’d done there. She smiled to the extent her skin would allow it."......
Pearson's dialog is a joy to read. Sometimes I would read a line out loud, just to hear it.
....""What did ya’ll hit him with?” the larger one asked as the smaller one squatted to examine the damage. Cutler left it to me. I told her, “Enthusiasm.”"....
Characters like Ray Tatum are a rare find, and this fast moving mystery is funny and frightening - Ray handles events as they come, as if placed in a Hitchcock thriller that has gone terribly wrong.
...."Our waitress was blonde and leathery. She looked like a Dot or a Madge, equal parts mentholated cigarette stink, treacly perfume, and phlegm ."....

First In Flight edition by TR Pearson Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
I have been a fan of T. R. Pearson's books for years. I stumbled on A Short History of a Small Place and was hooked. I once read a review of his work that described it as a story told by a crazy uncle. His earlier works seem more to fit that description but there is still a good share of it in his more recent works. I open every new book I get by him with the knowledge it is going to be an exciting ride with twists and turns thrown in for good measure. For me, his books are well worth the ride.
Classic TR Pearson in terms of characterization and humor, so very enjoyable from that standpoint. His works over the past several years, probably after "Glad News of the Natural World," are not nearly the quality of his earler work. They seem a bit more slapdash, a little more hastily put together, including his novels written as Rick Gavin. The typos are often horrendous. All that being said, for a quick, entertaining read, you can't go wrong, even if you can't quite believe the relationship between the narrator and the Major in "First in Flight."
As with most of T.R. Pearson's tales, you don't read this for the complex plot - you read it for the writing style and the dialogue. This story is about an older policeman who finds himself embroiled in the hunt for the perpetrators of multiple ghastly murders. The characters come out of a specific time and place - 00's Off-season Outer Banks North Carolina and will either remind you of your relatives or why you moved away from them. I find T.R. Pearson to be to North Carolina/Southern Virginia what Garrison Keillor is to Minnesota - but a bit rougher. Anyway, if you have enjoyed T.R. Pearson in the past, you will enjoy this book.
The plot is complex and proceeds apace, but what kept me turning the pages of this book was the character development, the local atmosphere, the dialog. I almost felt like I was intruding on occasion, my sense of immersion was so strong.
Ray is the kind of guy we'd all like to know and to be--competent and likable (once you get past his gruff exterior) and he's got a heart of gold.
Here's one way I judge a book was I glad to finally finish it, or was I was sad when I turn the last page? With this book, I was definitely sad that the experience was over. I'm looking forward to learning more about Ray, and I hope, his new-found colleagues on the Outer Banks.
I hate to be the dissenter here, especially because I love TR Pearson. Maybe, hopefully, it's just this book.
I've read a couple of the Ray Tatum mysteries and liked them pretty well (they're no "Short History" but that was a masterpiece, and I think you're only allowed to have one of those in you if you're an author). What got to me in this book, though, wasn't that it wasn't comparable to "Short History." The characters just weren't believable, like giving Ray Tatum a case in which he was a semi-suspect in a town in which he was a stranger, and the hardcore intelligence lady who came to him, unknown, just to have sex.
I enjoyed the quirkiness of some of it -- typical TR Pearson style -- ( think legs with no body attached) and enjoyed a laugh-out-loud moment at one point, but a lot of the book seemed like it was still in draft form, not completely thought out, not totally written through. It felt rushed and the characters felt flat. Mr. Pearson, if you are reading this, I am truly sorry. I love your work. It's just this one book I didn't particularly enjoy. Not a bad average.
